Product Description

(1) Overview

The 180900 is a receptacle terminal housing belonging to the FASTIN‑FASTON series, designed for wire‑to‑wire applications. This housing accommodates .250‑series (6.35 mm) contacts. According to the application specification, the product line includes housings with 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 11 circuit positions. The 180900 specifically provides 4 positions. Each housing features circuit identification markings on the mating face and polarization features for positive mating. For the .187 and .250 series, receptacle housings are optionally available with mounting flanges for panel mounting, though the 180900 is described as cable mount (free‑hanging). The housing material is natural (clear/off‑white) nylon.

(2) Key Features and Requirements

Temperature Rating: The housing is rated for continuous use up to 125 °C [256 °F], permitting operation in relatively high‑temperature environments such as automotive engine compartments or industrial machinery.

Storage and Handling:

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light may deteriorate the housing material.
Reeled contacts should be stored with coil‑wound reels horizontal and traverse‑wound reels vertical.
Contacts should remain in their shipping containers until use to prevent deformation. A first‑in, first‑out inventory practice is recommended to avoid contamination that could affect signal transmission.
For housings produced with natural nylon, discoloration (green, yellow, or dark white) may occur over time. This does not affect form, fit, or function, as guaranteed by the resin supplier and validated by TE.
Do not store contacts near chemicals such as alkalies, ammonia, citrates, phosphates, sulfur compounds, amines, carbonates, nitrites, or tartrates, as these may cause stress corrosion cracking. Where such conditions exist, phosphor‑bronze contacts are recommended instead of brass.

Wire Selection and Preparation:

The contacts accept stranded wire sizes from 26 AWG down to 8 AWG. The acceptable insulation diameter for each contact is given in the associated applicator sheet. Proper strip length is necessary for correct wire insertion into the contact. The conductor must not be nicked, scraped, or cut during stripping.

Crimp Requirements (Critical for reliable termination):

Wire barrel crimp: The crimp height and width must be within the dimensions specified in the applicator sheet. This area is the most compressed and critical for electrical and mechanical performance.
Insulation barrel crimp: The crimp must result in either an “F” crimp (closed seam with no insulation in the seam), an overlap crimp (tips overlap and wrap firmly without cutting insulation), or a scroll crimp (each tip curls inward to touch the insulation) for wires with reduced insulation thickness. The wire must be centered within the crimped insulation barrel.
Crimp length: Defined as the portion of the wire barrel (excluding bellmouths) fully formed by the crimping tool.
Bellmouths: Front and rear bellmouths shall be evident. For special terminal 160928 crimping, bellmouth dimensions are required to be 0.5 mm to 0.76 mm.
Cutoff tab and burr: Must not exceed the dimensions given in the applicator sheet.
Wire barrel flash: Must not exceed the specified limit.
Wire location: Conductors and insulation must be visible in the transition area between wire barrel and insulation barrel. Conductors may extend beyond the wire barrel only up to the maximum dimension shown in the applicator sheet.
Wire barrel seam: Must be closed with no loose wire strands visible.
Twist and roll: No deformation that would prevent proper mating is allowed. Twist and roll is permissible only within the limits shown in Figure 3 of the specification.
Straightness: Bending caused by crimping is acceptable within stated limits (up/down and side‑to‑side). Periodic inspections are required to ensure consistent crimp formation.

Tensile Inspection (Pull Test):

Crimped contacts must hold the wire firmly and meet minimum pull‑test tensile values. The required minimum forces for each wire size are:

Wire Size (AWG) Minimum Force (N [lbs])
26 17.80 [4]
24 26.70 [6]
22 35.60 [8]
20 57.80 [13]
18 89.00 [20]
16 133.40 [30]
14 222.40 [50]
12 311.40 [70]
10 355.90 [80]
8 400.30 [90]

The tensile testing machine head travel must be adjusted to 25.4 mm [1.0 in] per minute, and force applied directly and gradually for one minute.

Contact Insertion:

Each contact is inserted into its cavity from the wire end of the housing. An audible or tactile “click” indicates full seating. After insertion, gently pull the wire back to ensure the contact’s locking lance has engaged the housing’s locking finger.
Panel Mounting (for .187 and .250 series receptacle housings):
Although the 180900 is cable mount, the specification provides panel cutout dimensions for .250 series housings of various sizes (4, 6, 8 circuits). For reference, the panel dimensions A–J are given in Figure 7 of the PDF, but the 180900’s specific panel mounting is not described – it is a free‑hanging version.

Mating:

The polarization features of the plug housing and receptacle housing must be aligned before pushing the housings together.

Repair:

Damaged or defective contacts or housings must not be used. If a damaged contact is detected before insertion, cut the wire at the back of the contact and re‑terminate. If damage occurs after insertion, cut the wire directly at the wire end of the housing and use new contacts or housings.

(3) Environmental Compliance

The 180900 complies with the following regulations based on the provided product text:
EU RoHS (2011/65/EU): Compliant. This includes Delegated Directive 2015/863/EU. For EEE categories 8 and 9, restrictions apply from July 22, 2021.
